One of the most dynamic playmakers in this year's recruiting class decided he wanted to catch passes in Knoxville for the next year or two.
Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson surprisingly chose the Vols over Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss and Auburn, giving UT another offensive weapon to go along with Justin Hunter, Da'Rick Rogers and Tyler Bray. Patterson is a five-star player, according to 247 Sports and Scout, and he is widely considered by all recruiting services to be the top-ranked junior college player in the country.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pound playmaker had offers from virtually anybody, chiefly because he is a threat to score every time he gets his hands on the ball. His size-speed combo is out of this world, as he has a compact frame but still sports a 40-time in the 4.4s. Though the Vols took a lump in the past week with the defection of longtime linebacker commitments Dalton Santos to Texas and Otha Peters to Arkansas, getting a player of Patterson's caliber softens the blow.
He will immediately step in and play from Day One, giving UT another downfield threat to go along with Hunter and allowing Rogers to slide back into the slot, where he can go across the middle and use his big body to make the tough catch-and-run.

Patterson's journey to being a Tennessee commitment came full-circle with his signing on the dotted line Wednesday. UT was one of the first schools to offer him and figured to have a major early advantage because Patterson's former teammate and high school quarterback Justin Worley was already in orange and white. Every time any service did an update on him, the Vols were prominently mentioned by the quiet, easy-going kid who played recruiting very close to the vest the whole way.
But then came the disappointing 5-7 season, one in which the redshirt was stripped from Worley prematurely and he played sparingly and not particularly well. Following a season-ending loss to Kentucky, UT had a mutual parting of ways with Patterson's position coach Charlie Baggett.
All of a sudden, Tennessee wasn't mentioned as much anymore. UT began taking a back seat to several schools, chiefly Georgia -- the new favorite -- and Auburn with dynamic recruiter Trooper Taylor. Then, Patterson took late visits to LSU and Ole Miss, very much enjoying each one. At one point last week, all five SEC schools felt they had legitimate chances to land him on National Signing Day.
Throughout, Vols wide receivers coach and emerging recruiting ace Darin Hinshaw continued to recruit Patterson, having multiple discussions with the star player. That relationship kept growing, and the Vols quietly worked their way back into the fray. Patterson went from the first player Hinshaw called on last year's National Signing Day to the first new name to sign with the Vols on this year's.
Patterson's JUCO numbers were off the hook this year. He finished with 61 catches for 924 yards and 13 receiving touchdowns, three kick return touchdowns, 390 rushing yards and another six rushing TDs on his way to his second consecutive JUCO All-American campaign.
The defensive losses hurt, but it's obvious that with Patterson, UT is just going to simply outscore everybody. The top three receivers in Knoxville next year will rival anybody else's top three in the country. Also, four-star pass-catchers Drae Bowles, Jason Croom and Alton "Pig" Howard are also on their way to Knoxville with South Carolina's Quinshad Davis still on the board and a possibility to sign with Tennessee today.
In other early morning Signing Day news, Virginia defensive tackle Korren Kirven spurned homestate Virginia Tech and the Vols to sign with national champion Alabama.
But we'll certainly take Patterson, perhaps one of the top five playmakers in the entire class. Welcome to Big Orange Country!

apparently, we're playing the "who needs linebackers when you have ALL THE RECEIVERS" game
Incipient_Senescence - February 1, 2012
Good strategy
I used it in fantasy football last year. Looking forward to seeing what kinds of players Dooley can get in trades.
birdjam - February 1, 2012
was there a rule change regarding 7v7 games that I missed?
Incipient_Senescence - February 1, 2012
Looks like we're going with 4 verticals every down.
Why? Because we can!!! #ALLTHERECEIVERS #WRU

Says Josh Ward:

and we're still going 3-4 despite losing a couple at the position
Incipient_Senescence - February 1, 2012
Has he sent his LOI in yet?
VolsnCards5 - February 1, 2012 via mobile
yeah, he was in before 8 o'clock
Incipient_Senescence - February 1, 2012
That makes sense...DE in the 4-3 to OLB in the 3-4
gramsey712 - February 1, 2012
Maybe this is just finally accepting that we can't run block
So to replace that we’ll get every receiver.
Ben Miller - February 1, 2012
I enjoy good starts like this on signing day
Ben Miller - February 1, 2012
Verily, we are still Wide Receiver U.
I love it.

so
Where does this put the other wr such as drae bowles?
tenken - February 1, 2012 via mobile
He signed
Along with Pig Howard, Jason Croom, and Q Davis probably at noon.
Lots of very good WR’s in this class.
Should have no problem recruiting the top QB’s for 2013
VolBrian - February 1, 2012
A stud RB would be wise to sign with us
As pass-happy as we’ll be, we could totally have just one featured running back and defenses will rarely have him as their first priority.
Can somebody get the word out?

What did I tell you guys yesterday?
Of course we were going to have a big day, you just gotta have faith in this coaching staff.
Caban - February 1, 2012
nobody is going to call me out on this?

Incipient_Senescence - February 1, 2012
I just woke up
So is dooley still going to get fired, cause he replaced Peters with Patterson
/lolkidding
bsmithinc - February 1, 2012
They were going to fire him today but now they have to wait until Bynum decides
dmiles - February 1, 2012
I'd take Peters 100 times out of 100
but it does look better than it did yesterday

Rucker Tweeted:
According to 247 sports, Tennessee to finish highest in recruiting rankings of teams with a losing record.
bsmithinc - February 1, 2012
Say what you like about our coaching...
But these guys can recruit.
_trey_ - February 1, 2012 via Android app
Can we just keep a parallel recruiting staff?
Call them all GA’s?
CDarwin - February 1, 2012
and they're even a better recruiting staff going into next year
phil g - February 1, 2012
What are we 6th in the SEC in the rankings?
Or is it 5th?
They didn’t do a bad job, but it wasn’t a homerun class either. Many needs went unfilled.
kidbourbon - February 1, 2012 via mobile
pretty much this
filled our primary need (DT), iffy on our #2 (RB), flameout on #3 (LB depth), filled #4 (WR), filled #5 (playmaking DB).
overall B

Even after Wilcox leaves
falconnuke - February 1, 2012
Pretty excited about Patterson...
The Vols are going to have plenty of weapons for Bray next year, hopefully he can take full advantage of them. They have a shot at having one of the top offenses in the country. Overall happy with how today turned out.
jpcisco - February 1, 2012
Now on to next year
Got some work to do in the following positions:
- OL at least 3
- LB at least 3-4
- RB a top rated stud please
- QB keep taking one good prospect a year…something Fulmer failed to do
- TE
- DL at least 2-3 just because we should always take at least two
- Rest of the positions, best available athletes
phil g - February 1, 2012
yeah, OL and LB are the most important positions to take good numbers next year
and we desperately need quality at RB and the standard one QB per year.
but another potential position of need is WR. We’re only bringing in three freshmen this year, and we only have one from last year’s class. Da’Rick, Justin, and Cordy will be seniors or gone in 2013. We’ll need a minimum of 2, likely 3-4 again.
Incipient_Senescence - February 1, 2012
Don't know that we failed to attempt to take a good QB prospect...
But we certainly got screwed our share of times.
Chris Leak and Chris Simms being the most obvious examples… although in the Leak case we probably ended up benefiting with the better QB in Ainge.
Crompton’s complete and total faceplant was one of the biggest QB busts from anyone over the last decade, at least until midseason 2009. James Banks was a pretty huge bust too, outside of a handful of huge catches in 2003.
We were also in on some HUGE names that we just barely missed…
Marcus Vick, Trent Edwards, Kyle Wright, JaMarcus Russell, Xavier Lee, Chase Patton, Brian Brohm, Chad Henne, Jake Locker, Mitch Mustain, Blaine Gabbert, EJ Manuel, and Terrelle Pryor were all pretty close to coming to UT.
I know that Terrelle Pryor was actually a slight UT lean prior to David Cutcliffe leaving for Duke.
Caban - February 1, 2012
we didn't take a QB in '08
and didn’t get one in ’09 because of the coaching transition. so that hurt
