16-5 (5-3 SEC) |
Tennessee is fresh off their blow-off-some-steam win against Alabama, while Georgia is stinging from a 68-48 loss to Vanderbilt in Nashville. Both teams have had struggles as of late, though Georgia is a team that Tennessee tends to show up against. In conference terms, this game gives Tennessee a chance to effectively separate themselves and Kentucky from the rest of the field, while Georgia needs the win if they want any hope of a top 2 finish in the conference. With three teams tied for third in conference, a loss could potentially drop Georgia to 5th, placing them at risk of not earning a bye in the SEC tournament.

The Bulldogs may very well have the second most talented roster in the conference, but suffer their own unique brand of the same struggle that Tennessee faces - a seeming disconnect between talent and performance. Where Tennessee lacks cohesiveness, Georgia often fails to play inspired ball. A very precision-oriented approach to basketball often appears to lack the energy and emotion that teams like Tennessee and Kentucky attempt to infuse in their game. If Georgia can muster the emotional energy at home against Tennessee, they can make a serious game of this. Likewise, if Tennessee can't find their stride and stay in form, they can open the door for Georgia.
Yet like many games between Summitt and Landers, it appears that both variables would need to swing in Georgia's favor for this game to become the upset they desire. And Tennessee has played well against Georgia for a few years in a row, particularly off the efforts of this year's senior class. It's a group of players that laid eggs against Notre Dame and Stanford, but have played brilliantly against Georgia over the last few years.
The key matchups may very well come when players come off the bench. Georgia's rotation is effectively eight deep, and primarily a six-man with only two players that pull more than spot duty. The depth isn't as well developed as Tennessee's, which could become an issue if this game plays at the higher tempo that Tennessee will likely attempt to enforce. Likewise, if Georgia's starters run into early foul trouble, there really isn't a lot in the way of options. Meanwhile, Tennessee has eight players that could conceivably start (if Burdick's recent performance is any indication) and another two who can play meaningful relief time (Williams and Harrison), and even Brianna Bass is showing great promise as a role player lately.
The key is to keep this from tilting Georgia's way in the first half. In a previous life, Tennessee made a living off of second half comebacks after sloppy first halves. This year, the comebacks haven't always been there. But if Tennessee has a lead or a tie at halftime, they stand a very good chance at pulling away in the second half after wearing out their opponent. Tennessee needs to play solid, controlled ball in the first half. While running Georgia out of the gym would be great in the opening 20 minutes, it's not necessary. Solid play in the first will set up a chance to pull away in the second.
It wouldn't be a huge shock for Georgia to win, but it's not very likely. Georgia is a team that Tennessee is well built to beat.
Prediction: 82 - 65 Tennessee

Eggscellent!
I appreciate the pregame analysis. Always adds value to what to watch for in a game. Apparently there a a few injured UGA players that would give an added edge to the Ladies.
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
I hadn't picked up on the injuries
which, I admit, is because I didn’t do a whole lot of reading into that kind of detail this time around. Usually I like to get a feel for the teams before writing, but I’ve had a nagging feeling all year long that Georgia would disappoint, and I’m sure it’s pretty evident in what I wrote. I like Landers, I like the talent on the team, but I just don’t see them coming to potential.
But back to injuries: it almost helps us that Johnson and Stricklen had early foul trouble against Alabama. They got a lot of much needed rest.

I think the questioned distribution of playing time had alot more to do ...
with resting those carrying the load for the road trip to GA.
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
So um...
what’s the Basswatch?
falconnuke - January 29, 2012
Over under on Brianna Bass' appearance in the game...
would appropriately be placed in a glossary of Rockytop Talk Lore, for the newbs. Other examples would be the gym back door, BreadSticks and sweet mother thereof, Saint Pat, and other inanities.
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
BassWatch kinda evolved about 2 years ago
as we began to realize that Bass, as much as we love her, was not going to be Bobbitt 2.0.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Nice transition bucket for Megan..
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
First media timeout without any fouls.
Good distribution of shot attempts as well.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Our little shooting slump.
Ergh.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Going on a month vs any competition
aurabass - January 29, 2012
Stricklen with the "shooters touch" today
aurabass - January 29, 2012
So I guess Bass didn't start despite the rumors?

I like the row of UT fans immediately behind the press bench.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Stricklen's missed a lot of those.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Wow a TO to stop a run
aurabass - January 29, 2012
...slow timeout there...
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
any TO is a surprise with this staff
aurabass - January 29, 2012
They were really hoping for the under-8 timeout to stop things.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Goergia's run timed exactly with Glory's breather.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Bass is in.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Double foul?
Erg.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Spani's shot trajectory is a little flat.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
That was just a lazy pass...
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
Yup.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
UT @ UK to be on espnU.
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
UT's a much better team with Glory in.
Right now, I’ll consider it a win if UT has a lead by halftime. With 2 fouls, Glory won’t be seen the remainder of this half. Georgia’s rotation likely won’t hold up in the second half.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Simmons with only one attempt in first half so far???
serious de-ice job scheduled…
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
errr....not a spectacular finish to the half.
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
No.
We need Glory out there.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
TO's: UT 13, UG 6.
Would love to see some regression to the mean there.
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
A few of them were boneheaded, too.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
GameTraker's not updating to halftime, so I think I'll skip the graphic.
Short story: very even stats-wise. Shouldn’t be, though. And Georgia’s going to be sucking wind in the second half.

oh..wait…
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
Good TO by Andy there...
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
3 on Armstrong, I believe.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
So now's when UT starts to pull away?
falconnuke - January 29, 2012
Pretty much.
A little earlier than I anticipated, though. Georgia still has one comeback left in them, if UT allows.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
make him pay for waiting to take TO...
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
Burdick's size 13 1/2 feet betrayed her there.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Erg.
Sloppy 30 seconds leading into the media timeout. They play so sharp, then they derp it up so spectacularly.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
College athletics...
part of why I love it!
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
me too.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
3 on Mitchell.
3 on Armstrong. That could present some real troubles later on.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Georgia timeout, likely to provide some rest.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
The one thing I don't like about Landers is how he yells at his players.
A lot of times, you can see the players take it a bit too personally. He doesn’t always know when his energy is motivational or off-putting.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Genoesque?
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
Kinda.
Except without the cache of championships to back it up.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
I do like seeing Ariel drive as much as she does.
She’ll get better at it, and it will make her a nightmare to defend in future years.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
So far, I like these refs.
Haven’t seen anything to really criticize. A couple misses both ways, but nothing egregious.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
they've done a pretty good job
they haven’t let anything get out of hand and they’ve done a good job of making the “stars” play honest, and have clearly called the game right down the middle.
falconnuke - January 29, 2012
For the record:
Scott Yarbrough
Mark Zentz
Billy Smith.
(Just in case I need to look it up.)
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
4 with 3 fouls now.
Game over.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
3 with 3
Math is hard.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
That's 3-6 last three trips to the line.
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
Massengale just posterized them on that fake.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
sweet ball fake to be sure.
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
That's the kind of thing I was referring to a few minutes ago.
They absolutely have to respect her ability to pass off the drive. If she can keep improving her ability to finish drives with a score, she’ll freeze defenses.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Foul was first.
Don’t know about the one on Donald. I wasn’t watching for that.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
How much contact to draw a foul?
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
It's a 4d20 roll...
;-)
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
nah

falconnuke - January 29, 2012

David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Welcome back, Stricklen.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Up 16 with 4 timeouts in hand.
Now would be a good time to rotate a few bench players in, give the starters a breather, and bring them back in with 5ish to go.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Manning coming in.
Good.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
17 minutes for Spani.
Made her first trey, missed everything after. (Only 4 attempts.) Not a bad work-in game. Good to see the 17 minutes, above all else.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
That was a really goofy shotclock violation.
Shekinna is still gun shy from three.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Somebody remind the Lady Vols that it's not QUITE over yet.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
This is going to be a minute-long possession.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
That was nice...
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
Stricklen with breadsticks today.
21 points, 6 boards, solid play, and some actual initiative.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Unnecessary foul by Manning.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
3 Georgia players have yet to sub out.
Ouch.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
What's been wrong with Ariel today?
Couldn’t watch the game.
Chris Pendley - January 29, 2012
Not a whole lot.
The team as a whole gets a lot sloppier when Glory is on the bench, and fouls caused Glory to sit for parts of the first half. Not all the Ariel turnovers were entirely Ariel’s fault. Some were miscommunications when she tried to lead passes.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
I was thinking more the low assist numbers.
This does kind of show what we were talking about offline a little while ago, though. Is Stricklen getting the first opportunity to score?
Chris Pendley - January 29, 2012
It certainly seemed like they were running the offense through her in the second half.
chuckiepoo - January 29, 2012
About friggin' time.
Chris Pendley - January 29, 2012
That, and they were getting it into Glory a lot more.
That’s why she had three assists.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Further detail: Glory was kicking it back out a lot more than normal.
I think somebody noticed early on that Georgia was doubling down on her when she got the ball, so they told her to kick out.
Also, Shekinna missed a lot of close-in shots in the first half, many of which were fed by Glory. Halftime could have been an eight point difference or more.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Burdick started, btw.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
Oh. Good.
Maybe the message is finally starting to get through, then.
Chris Pendley - January 29, 2012
Burdick at the 3 and Stricklen at the 4.
That got Shekinna in at the post a lot more frequently, which gave her more short shots. It took her a little bit to settle into it, but it really started clicking after about 8 minutes. And Burdick’s long 2 shot is the best on the team. It’s nice having her out there in what appears to be a rotation with Spani.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
This game was a "sellout".
/60%empty.
David Hooper - January 29, 2012
In other news:
- Beating South Carolina on Thursday will make it all but impossible for Tennessee to be any worse than 2nd in the SEC.
- Ohio State and the Mighty Petulance lost, helping break the three-way tie at 9th.
- Maryland’s loss earlier may bump Tennessee to 8th.
- With other teams in the 5-20 range racking up losses, a 2 seed is looking much likelier now than it did a week ago at this time.
