No online television for this game tonight as Tennessee gets a chance to vent against an overmatched SEC opponent. A loss is unthinkable and would signal that all is going as the Mayans have foreseen. In more realistic waters, the focus of this game is how the Lady Vols respond to their recent embarrassment in South Bend. Do they take over the game early and prevent an underdog from having hope? Or do they come out flat and allow Alabama to hang around a little longer than they should. Either way, it's a road game, and Tennessee has not been particularly consistent on the road.

Something to remember going in to Alabama
My view of Holly’s comments after the ND loss and why we leave Time Outs on the table to our detriment
HOLLY claims it was defense – but it was not
Happy to help you out Holly – let’s look at those first half stats that had you all worried about defense
Tennessee hits 7 or 35 shots in the half and 4 of 10 free throws
TOTAL FG% 1st Half: 7-35 20.0% F Throw % 1st Half: 4-10 40.0%3-Pt. FG% 1st Half: 0-2 0.0% 2nd Half: 3-6 50.0%
25 Johnson, Glory…… f 3-12 0-0 3-10 3 6 9
LSU held to 35% in the first half and out-rebounded enough to offset several turnovers
and allow UT 4 more shots.
TOTAL FG% 1st Half: 11-31 35.5% 3-Pt. FG% 1st Half: 2-6 33.3%
So Holly looks at these stats and says
SO LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THAT FIRST HALF SHALL WE?

Anyone taking a close look at this situation will not come back and say our biggest problem
was poor defense in a half where ND was held to 28 points on 35% shooting. Our biggest
problem wasn’t in running an offense to get the ball inside to Glory and Vicki or Alicia – our
problem was Glory and Alicia missing open inside shots, and Glory missing free throws.
If Glory just hits those missed layups and free throws we are leading at the half
14 Missed Layups in the first half 28 points left on the floor 6 missed FTs and 3 front ends add 9 more for 37
We could have been leading 55 to 28 if we just hit free throws and layups
Just thought you might like to know
aurabass - January 26, 2012
My takeaway from the first half was missing a whole lot of easy shots.
And once that happened, they got frustrated and started making real mistakes. But they did miss a lot of shots that they almost never miss.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Full agreement
Why not call a Time Out and get them to calm down and focus on those 14 or more missed layups? It was a problem of rushed frenetic unfocused real effort without results that led to a great deal of frustration and a blow out
aurabass - January 26, 2012
1:03 in and it's 7-0 UT.
Good. Put ’em away and go for the jugular. In the first half.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Woah.
Starting lineup is: Bass, Baugh, Burdick, Massengale, Johnson.
Weird. Best ballhandling guards on the floor. Not turning over must be the priority.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Bass starts over Meighan?
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Ball handling.
Bass is actually pretty good at it.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Second Alabama timeout, and we haven't even reached the first media timeout.
Wowzers.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
And that was when the action was dead after a turnover (Baugh 3 seconds in the paint).
Alabama’s giving up early.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
3 seconds on a player with the ball?
I recall that 20 second situation at ND where we missed 6 layups. We had three players under the rim for 20 seconds.
aurabass - January 26, 2012
3 second calls are horribly inconsistent in the women's game.
I’ve seen 5 or 6 seconds not get called, and I saw a ONE second call.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
I thought the 3 second rule
was for post player without the ball before the ball is shot
aurabass - January 26, 2012
In theory.
Not that the women’s refs care about such details.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
We would never think about that
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Man... it's kinda nice to enjoy what appears to be a massacre...
in our favor.
Versus a rival.
Caban - January 26, 2012
First two misses, and it's all offensive rebounds until the score and the and-one.
We’ll see if Johnson makes the FT after the timeout. (chuckle)
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
It's good.
Wow.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
In case anyone is actually curious...
Ken Pomeroy actually has us beating Auburn by nearly double digits, with an 80% chance of winning. Followed by a 20 point loss at Kentucky(5% chance of a win).
And the whole reason I went there… Murray State is nearly at 50% to finish undefeated now.
And only ranked #40. The OVC is really weak this year, with Austin Peay probably being the 2nd best team in it.
Caban - January 26, 2012
Looks like the staff is sending a message to
Kinna and Meighan?
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Yup.
I was about to say that Stricklen might be getting a day to heal, but she just checked in.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
So UT hasn't scored since Glory checked out.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
And here's Simmons.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
So the committee's answer is weird lineups?
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Well, start any random 5 and you can still beat Alabama.
This is a lineup based on sending a message to the players who AREN’T starting.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
watching this Bama team...
I’d say there are local HS teams that could beat them.
And I’m not being facetious. Seriously, I think Bradley Central and Science Hill could take Alabama.
Caban - January 26, 2012
Possibly.
BTW, are you watching on TV or have you found a net feed?
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
TV
SportSouth via Dish Network
Caban - January 26, 2012
bummer
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
6 for 6 start, then a 3 for 13 follow-up. Eegh.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
umm... wow
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/irsay-fires-back-manning-calls-peyton-politician-005156830.html
Guessing he’s definitely done with Indy now
Caban - January 26, 2012
Now it's picking up a bit.
Let’s get 40 by halftime, m’kay?
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Still, it was a bad sign that Tennessee went scoreless for 3 minutes as soon as Glory checked out.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Mickey is not a fan of these refs.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Simmons, Baugh, Johnson, and Stricklen all with 2.
Come on, Ariel! You can join the “usual starters with 2 fouls” club!
Yeesh.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Good thing it's Bama with these refs
aurabass - January 26, 2012
No kidding.
Not about to hold this against the players on either team.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
RAHSPEC' MAH AUTHORITAH!
Good grief, refs. The game isn’t about you.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
That's at least 4 consecutive possession with a foul.
UT, UA, UT, UA.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Then turnover and another foul.
I’d guess that 3 of those were warranted.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
(not necessarily the ones on Alabama)
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Alicia - that 'lay up' never had a chance !!!
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Another bizarre line up
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Simmons must really be in the doghouse
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Now it's because of the players that have 2 fouls.
(Simmons has 2.)
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Clarity: Summitt has always held players on the bench if they have 2 first half fouls.
She’s not about to change that pattern against Alabama.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
So 1 more foul each on Ariel and Alicia
and we could be playing 4 on 5?
aurabass - January 26, 2012
heh
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
There - Alicia got hers
come on Ariel
aurabass - January 26, 2012
She was only on the court for 2 minutes - missed that
aurabass - January 26, 2012
9 assists, 3 turnovers.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Surprised Alabama's coach isn't a former...
football player under Bear Bryant
Caban - January 26, 2012
2 fouls on Manning now.
Now I’m almost hoping for 2 on Massengale. (And on the radio cast, you could hear some random coach complaining about having 21 combined fouls in the game already.)
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Manning's still in.
I guess every rule has its breaking point, and ensuring that Glory doesn’t get her 3rd is the priority.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
With this many fouls, UT ought to bleed clock every possession.
Odds are the refs will call a foul on Alabama out of boredom.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
24 in the half so far
what’s the record?
aurabass - January 26, 2012
I don't know.
I remember a men’s game that got up to 50 in regulation a couple years back. When UT had something like 13 players available.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
23 fouls called now.
This is getting comical.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Hey, wait.
They’ve already passed their total against Notre Dame!
gg
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Big downside: Alabama's shooting over 40%.
Part of that is the foul trouble that UT is having. The best defenders aren’t in there.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
3 on Manning.
Oy.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
47-32.
Not quite blood for the blood god yet but the hyperactive refs kinda destroyed any semblance of an actual game.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Records for fouls
Most personal fouls, both teams, game:
77 – Minneapolis (42) vs. Syracuse (35), April 23, 1950
91 fouls is the NCAA Men’s Basketball Record and NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Record.
Northern State had 51 fouls (an NCAA record for a single team in a game) vs Southern Indiana (with 40 fouls) in a triple overtime game on November 15, 1997
The Division I Record: 84 fouls between Arizona (50) and Northern Arizona (34) on January 26, 1953
The Division III Record: 80 fouls between Grinnel College, IA (46) and St. Norbert College, WI (34) on January 8, 2000

That was Bruce Pearl coached Southern Indiana team
Caban - January 26, 2012
Stats, fwiw.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Also: 13/4 A/TO for UT. 4/8 A/TO for Bama.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Alabama's trying the win via forfeit strategy
Section 1. The Team
Art. 1. At the start of the game, each team shall consist of five players, one of
whom shall be the captain.
Art. 2. Each team may continue to play with fewer than five players when all
other squad members are not eligible or able to play.
Art. 3. When there is only one player participating for a team, that team shall
forfeit unless the referee believes that both teams have an opportunity to win.
Caban - January 26, 2012
Really?
I thought that if a foulout left a team with only 4 players, that player could remain in despite having 5 fouls. (But that all previous fouled-out players were still out of the game.) I think that happened to Syracuse (men) a couple years back in a multi-overtime game.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
That's the NBA and international rule...
Thinking anything beyond the sixth foul on a player results in two FTs plus the ball
Caban - January 26, 2012
Probably.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
and yes...
teams going with 3 and 4 players does actually happen occasionally

Caban - January 26, 2012
Score to watch: Vandy leading Georgia at halftime.
If Georgia loses, UT has a two-game lead on all non-Kentucky teams is is effectively guaranteed no worse than 2nd in the conference. That’s a big deal come SEC tourney time. No Kentucky on a neutral court until the final game, which almost guarantees a long tourney run. That pretty well guarantees a 2 or 3 seed in the NCAA.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Bass started both halves with a three.
Happee.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Wish I could be happy
but starting Bass is not a good sign anytime despite the threes IMHO
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Not the best of starts to the half.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
how that wasn't a foul in some way is astounding
especially considering how the game has been called
Caban - January 26, 2012
there we go
ticky tack hand-check
Caban - January 26, 2012
Refs are Felicia Grinter, Wesley Dean, and Bill Larence.
I really ought to keep a file of the refs I don’t trust.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Long long list I suspect
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Kantor & Bell used to top my list when I paid attention
aurabass - January 26, 2012
I agree about Dee.
Totally.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
There's 2 on Ariel.
This is plaid.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Alabama now has a higher FG% than UT.
(Well, prior to that shot.)
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
And Glory & Kinna are actually hitting layups!!1
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Cierra needs to pull the trigger on those open 3's
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Lady Vols offense is all kinds of discombobulated right now
also, discombobulated apparently gets through spell check
Caban - January 26, 2012
As well it should.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Of course.
It’s a perfectly cromulent word.
danmarcel - January 26, 2012
Glory hits another layup under control
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Too bad that has to be notable
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Better.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
$immon$
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Ok, now it's over.
Shame it took until Alabama ran out of gas for it to happen, though.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Like the running
Glad to see them looking to push it. We seem quicker down the court.
Bruce in Louisville - January 26, 2012
bigger picture:
After the ND debacle, they needed a game to put that one behind them. Next up is Georgia in Athens, which is a much bigger deal than tonight. Rough play tonight doesn’t necessarily mean anything. It could just be a wounded-pride team still thinking about the last one. (It could also be a sign of a dysfunctional team, which is a realistic concern.) But either way, it’s the Georgia game that will tell us about the current state of the team.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Trap game
And still up by 23. The state of the union is good.
danmarcel - January 26, 2012
Agreed.
Really wonder what’s going on inside this team.
Bruce in Louisville - January 26, 2012
A loss of some trust in the committee?
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Maybe.
Certainly the injuries have hurt.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Taber seems to be snake bit
when turf toe and a bone bruise ruin a career
aurabass - January 26, 2012
UGA losing to Vandy tonight
I think we go undefeated in the SEC from here on out and the tournament will come down to us vs KY in the final.
But an Elite 8 or Sweet 16 is more realistic than a final four
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Just turned on the broadcast
Who’s coaching? Is Pat up and active, or no?
Bruce in Louisville - January 26, 2012
the committee is managing the game
led by Holly I think
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Manning hits a layup and Miko playing well
aurabass - January 26, 2012
$tricklen
aurabass - January 26, 2012
get the number on that truck?
chuckiepoo - January 26, 2012
Thought it was a tank
aurabass - January 26, 2012
77 - 51.
Need to hold UA to only 8 more points.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Liking Miko in there
Bruce in Louisville - January 26, 2012
Her best performance of the year
with so few appearances – glad to see she’s back
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Nice IZZY
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Wonder if
there is a “we’re going to play the ones that show up” message going on.
Bruce in Louisville - January 26, 2012
Oops
This was a reply to the Miko thread above.
Bruce in Louisville - January 26, 2012
Sans Bass sub Ariel and this is next year's team
on the floor
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Hey Simmons
The interior player was open.
Bruce in Louisville - January 26, 2012
The color commentator is clueless
what “killer instinct”?
aurabass - January 26, 2012
Wow - what a block!
Bruce in Louisville - January 26, 2012
Izzy is playing pretty well
aurabass - January 26, 2012
We'll be in decent shape next year.
Not championship winning shape, I don’t think, but not first-round exit shape either.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
I'm pulling for UT to score 7 more and Alabama to score 6 more.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Your prediction is looking pretty good.
danmarcel - January 26, 2012
My predictions are usually pretty far off.
I don’t put much thought into them anymore, so it’s really a SquirrelNut™ kind of deal.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
GameTracker rosters are horked up.
Tennessee has Diamber Johnson, Chantel Hilliard, Gaynor Darriel, Fomille Candace, and Tyrese Tanner on the roster.
???
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Fomille has a heck of an outside shot
danmarcel - January 26, 2012
Georgia will lose. They're trailing by 20 right now.
David Hooper - January 26, 2012
Hmm
If we played the ones who work the hardest, who would that be?

Glory.

I'm thinking
Johnson, Harrison, Miko for starters.

Sounds good.
Kamiko’s only hangup has been conditioning. She gets winded too quickly.

I think she'll get some time next week.
Not sure if it’ll happen against Georgia, but she’s close. Just no sense in rushing it.

Even Stephen on rebounds (40 apiece).
We took 16 more shots, and we didn’t have Glory in for most of the game. But still.

Snap thoughts:
- I like rolling new starters in a game that was never really in doubt to send a message. On stats, it looked like it got through to Stricklen, at least – 5-9 in 15 minutes looks like the offense ran through her.
- If Simmons is in the doghouse due to bad shot selection ….um, well, see you next year.
- Bass had 5 steals(!!!).
- I still hate any Bass/Massengale lineup, but if you’re gonna do that to prove a point, this was the time to do it.
- Massengale had 11 assists, at least.
- Obviously, I don’t like the defense / board numbers (40% from the floor for Bama, matched boards), but given the other confusion, I can at least see it. Betting that’s back to normal next game.

Well, given that the refs called fouls until they ran out of fingers and toes (23 or 24 in the first half, IIRC),
I can partly understand the defense giving Alabama a bit more room.
Bass: she doesn’t turn the ball over. Check out her A/TO while you’re at it. If replacing Simmons with Bass means more ball control, more deliberate shot selection, and roughly the same shooting percentage, the argument actually makes more sense. Simmons gives fast breaks and some stellar defensive moments in conjunction with her questionable actions, so it’s not like it’s a clean argument. But rolling out the Arial/Brianna line meant an A/TO of about 3.8 for most of the first half. I wasn’t complaining much.
(And no, I’m still not arguing for Bass over Simmons. I’m just realizing the logic a bit more than I used to.)
