Tonight is another Teacher/Student match in the SEC, with Pat Summitt facing Nikki Caldwell at LSU for the first time. LSU/Tennessee was the best SEC rivalry during the first decade of the 2000s, but has slipped as of late due to the decline of LSU under Van Chancellor. In this first match, Caldwell is dealt a bit of a short hand as the talent on the team is not where it once was (more on that in a bit). In the meantime, the trollgaze lands squarely on Lady Tigers fans we at Tennessee (okay, just Chris and me, but still) see this as Caldwell's first time coaching in her eventual destination as the heir apparent to the Summitt throne.

(Note: at time of writing, Stricklen's status was uncertain. She is likely not playing, but her replacement in the starting lineup is unknown.)

LSU is a bizarre team to understand and are best understood by first knowing where they came from. After the Pokey Chatman scandal forced her resignation in early 2007, Van Chancellor went to LSU to coach in the 2007-2008 season. Riding off the immense talent that Chatman had brought in, he went undefeated in SEC play and went to LSU's fourth consecutive Final Four. But after that year, LSU lost seven seniors (!!), including Sylvia Fowles, they never recovered. Their 30-win seasons became 20 win seasons and their Final Fours fell to 2nd round loss, and then eventually missing the tournament entirely. Nikki inherited a team that had been largely recruited with hopes of continuing LSU's success, but beaten down with the reality of a coach who was ready to retire. And so the rebuilding began.

Caldwell decided to rebuild the defense first, and LSU's defense is stout. Their opponents have averaged 47.5 points per game (and 48.4 in conference). LSU also averages over 40 rebounds, 5 blocks and 10 steals per game, with much of the defensive production coming from the bench (especially young trees Krystal Forthan, Taylor Turnbow, and Shanece McKinney). Playing LSU is an exercise in frustration on an entirely different level from Kentucky; where the Wildcats prefer to keep you from getting the ball across halfcourt, LSU adds a smothering halfcourt to their press.

The offense has not been as sharp as the defense, and LSU averages 64.6 points per game. But here's where the oddities in the stats begin to surface: they're one of the lowest-scoring teams in the SEC, but they have averaged a very good 44.7% from the field. It's indicative of a team that doesn't see a lot of possessions, partly due to taking a long time on offense and partly due to forcing opponents deep into the shotclock.

LSU does not shoot many threes and don't really have a dedicated three-point threat. Barrett is their most accurate shooter at 48.5%, but has taken just under 2 attempts per game. This game will not look like the Vanderbilt game, where the Commodores would dedicate up to 4 total players to free up Foggie for a shot. LSU wants the ball in the paint, and Tennessee will have to commit to denying the entry pass.

Prediction: 71 - 55 Tennessee. Fewer possessions but a couple breaks and a second half run to end it.

BassWatch™: 5 minutes left in the first. No more wonky lineups.

Chris: Nikki Caldwell would do well to learn from how the Tennessee lineup operates - or at least should operate. She's done a fantastic job turning LSU around (something we'd expect from a former and future Lady Vol), and once again the Lady Vols run into a former Summitt disciple who preaches and practices defense and rebounding. The difference? LSU doesn't have an answer to Vicki Baugh, let alone Glory Johnson. Given Stricklen's injury (and - no offense, Tigers - how much next Monday night matters), I'd be happy to let her sit out a game in favor of Baugh, who has a great tandem attack with Glory going at the moment. I'd be concerned where the other points are coming from - I'm reluctant to say Simmons, even though in theory this could be a great game for her to shoot daggers - but LSU's offense isn't anything to write home about. I'd be happy to see this game won on free throws; if Simmons would be so kind as to get to the line, maybe I'll back off her a bit. This won't be particularly pretty, but unlike another team I can easily think of, the Lady Vols can win ugly.

69-48 Tennessee. Bass doesn't see the floor until the 9 minute mark of the second half. Please?

Bonus prediction: one LSU post defender fouls out.

Baugh starts in place of Stricklen.
Still, at the under-16, it's all Courtney Jones.

8-6 LSU.

$$immons!?!?
That being said:

/piddle

If a Pendley talks to himself in a GameThread

Does he make any noise?

Hoop will wander in eventually.
Also, free comment-padding!
This is a Simmons game.

2-5 from the floor (both threes), 3 TO.

This is hideous.

The Lady Vols are just now shooting 33% from the floor. They’re still down two.

Finally. Five quick points, Ladies up two.

This has been ugly, though. They miss Stricklen. Also, Glory’s only had two shots all game; Jones has been playing out of her mind.

Glory's finally on the board.
Also, they're solving the rotation issues by not rotating.

Burdick came in for Baugh.

That’s it.

Barrett picks up her second. Burdick to the line.

Only the 5th and 6th FTs attempted today, though.

This doesn't look to good Chris

Wonder what the story is on Spani

Severe bone bruise or something.

I’m a little disconcerted at this point. But the one source of offense – the Glory-Baugh combo – hasn’t been used at all this half.

Our highly praised trainers don't seem to work very fast

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a player without a non-ACL MCL injury out so long

Great Glory drive blown layup
We Are Who We Think We Are?
We Are Watching Twin Teams
Glory with a blow-by awesome move? Sweet.

Misses the wide open layup. V O L S GO VOLS GO!

WOO ALL BACKUP LINEUP (plus Glory)

Bass, Kamiko, Harrison, Burdick, Glory.

So there we go, Glory gone.

Looks like an Owie Shoulder, but not a Bad Owie.

Might be a Bad Owie.
It's almost the half.

That’s what I’m telling myself, at least.

That's what I figure too.

With nothing else to figure.

And Glory's going to the locker room early.

Sheesh.

So the good news is... We're Winning at half!

This is the extent of the good news.

Tied.
This is what I get for not watching the last 30 seconds.

So here is the good news: _____________

That's not good.

I missed what happened, though. Broken ankle?

...I'm gonna guess that's career ending.

That’s awful.

Fill me in?
I don't totally know.

LSU player – Destiny Hughes – went up for a loose ball and landed horribly.

Probably broken.

I tuned in just in time to catch it. Ugly.

Looked to me like the right knee and ankle could be involved

the knee bent in towards the floor in an odd manner and the ankle
did likewise

Yup.

Could be either. Or both.

Announcers just called it a knee injury
I rewatched it.

As she tried to pivot, Brianna Bass tripped over her foot. Basically, her right leg was bent with pretty much all her weight on it, and the ankle was torqued over, counter-clockwise. So whatever knee tendons that would strain were the ones that got hurt.

It was a pretty hard torque, too.

So how's it goi-

oh.

And Glory went to the locker room early after she got dinged up.

/wrists

Kinda looked like a separation.
Yeah.

Pop it back in and let’s go?

Depends on the type of separation/dislocation.

I don’t remember all the categories, but some are easier to handle and would just require a touch more tape.

we can't afford that
Also: is it 3ierra?

If she keeps this up, we may have to dredge up a take on Chi$$le.

3urdick?
Eh, I like 3ierra more.
Rolls off the tongue.
I think so too.

3 for B worked with Bjorklund largely because of pronunciation. Same with 3ierra.

Yup. It's gonna be up to Baugh.
Jones just clowned Manning.

What?

$$$immons?!?!?!

See, that is the shot she needs to take.

So how do you guys think this coaching by committee thing is going?

if you would care to share your views

I ....well.

Tough to ask that question tonight (what are you going to do in a close game without your three best players?). But I think it’s been adequate enough.

Ask again later.

In-game rotation is the biggest concern.
I'm not referring to tonight - overall is the thing

maybe a fanpost thread would be better than trying to sneak it in here

Hoop and I have been talking.

I think there will be something up soon, so just lump it in there.

Baugh needs the ball more, I think.

Massengale and Simmons have 18 shots combined. The rest of the team has 19.

Tough to pass in against LSU's zone.

But yes.

I agree with that
That was doing no favors.
That being said: I've been impressed with Burdick.
Glory checks in!

Admit it, you just released a breath you didn’t know you were holding.

LSU takes a 39-37 lead with 13:00 left.
I hope Stricklen is watching this and taking notes.
Making free throws would be nice.
and Baugh scoring when she's got it in close
The interior rotation has been as good as expected.

The guards are gonna need some oxygen.

See, *that* is how you use Bass if the game is close.
Glory's shoulder is hurting.

Had to be a separation/dislocation thingy. Whichever is the better of the two.

Betting it got popped back in.

Eat your heart out, Lamichael.

Yup.

Knowing Glory, I’m kinda surprised she didn’t have it done on the sideline.

She's holding it down and playing with one arm

a two armed Izzy might be the better option

Wow. Patience on the drive to force the defender to back away from Glory.

Way to go, Simmons.

After the first few minutes, I've been quietly impressed with her game.

I think she knows she needs to slow up before a shot, and she is.

Sometimes.

/tinkle

Well, hello Cierra.

I didn’t see you there, lurking on the bench and being a legitimate scoring option.

Feeling much better about next year already.
I'm not.

Now, two years from now?

Well, that for sure.

But it’s all relative. I went from “the Mayans were right” kinda bad feeling to “maybe reason to hope” kinda bad.

Manning's going to sub in for Glory.
Yup. Did she get knocked down or just wipe out on her own?
Collision with an LSU player. Not sure how much was whose fault.

But a definite collision.

Wonder if anyone keeps stats on how many TO's are taken by team

I would bet Tennessee leaves more TO’s unused than any SEC opponent

Neat pass from Simmons.

Really. That was just weird.

she did better on the receiving end but missed the open chippie
To be fair, the double slant fast break route is hard to hit.
the pass or the shot?
The pass.

Someone should’ve separated to the corner there, actually. I don’t put that entirely on Simmons.

See? That was smart.

It’s there. It’s in her head. She knows, and yet.

Yup.

She’s on her way.

Okay. Where's Ariel?
Okay. Where's Ariel?
And why is Simmons on the point with Bass in the game?
4 on Barrett!

Whee!

It's the 7 that I'm happy about.
Me too.

But now I can hope for 5 and be really happy.

Barrett on 4.

Now, I don’t know how much that matters – Courtney Jones has been insane.

Video Game Comment:

Traded in MW3, had a 15$ Gift Card, got Portal 2, Fable 3, and Sacred 2 (don’t hate) for my 360 for $3.22

Nice.

How’s Skyrim going?

Destini Hughes, the injured girl

is still fourth in minutes for LSU this game.

Hey, Simmons is only 5 TO away from a double-double!

She has to be there on missed shots
Use a TO Pat - you can't take them with you
That could've been a lot worse.
HEY GUYS HAS ANY FORMER PLAYER BEATEN SUMMITT?

I DON’T KNOW COULD SOMEBODY TELL ME?

You need the

sarcasm font maybe?

Has Miko been in at all?
Yeah, couple minutes in the first half.
So she's good to go but the coaches prefer Bass
Yeah. I ...well, we'll talk about it.
Yeah, for later

but I’m guessing they want one of Simmons or Massengale on the floor at all times, and that’s their way of ensuring they don’t get stuck with Williams and Bass while the others need a rest.

I guess.

But they were doing this even with Stricklen around.

Barrett's back in.

Get her.

I ...really?
Welcome to TBA

where refs feel they must prove the crowd wrong.

It's not normally this egregious, though.
It's my current theory.

That refs aren’t used to fans who are so vocal (and usually so correct). Some deal with it well; others get testy.

Yeah; this isn't quite the bandwagoning fan crowd.

Or they might be, but the bandwagon’s been so big the original bandwagoners are taking their kids to the game. Tough to not learn then.

And it's sometimes a lot easier to see the fouls in the women's game.
A normal FT night and we'd be up eight right now.
Finally a Simmonsish shot from LSU
I don't mind them jacking threes.

They’re not really built for that. They’ll start rushing those shots in a bit.

Well, that's one way to give LSU the bonus.
no no no no no no okay cool
Well, that sucked for LSU.

Barrett with an apparent (incidental) elbow in the nose, but UT took long enough with the ball that she was back up, so LSU had to call the timeout rather than get the free stoppage due to injury .

Wait, concussion?

What?

I missed that.

who?

Not sure.

How?

Heh.

But seriously, I missed it.

Simmons is actually better at 6 for 16 than I thought

ESPN box score

Ariel at 1 fo 10 is worse

She's like 6 for 10 on legitimate shots, though.
Glory doing her flying routine with that leap
She's not 100%, but even at 60% she's better than Harrison.
Barrett out?

Yes.

now LSU is down 2 of their starters like TN
Pretty sure I just heard Summitt yell "NO FOULS".
Wow. Lucky, that.
Man-to-man? Hey look, Glory drew a foul.

Smart to stay in zone nearly all game, though.

Hate those fouls off the ball in the last minute.
that should just about do it
Burdick Breadsticks?
I think so.

Especially for the surprise. Baugh had a beast game on the boards, though. And Simmons actually had a pretty good game, but …yeah, Burdick.

Or Stricklen, who indirectly was the MVP tonight.

And now we're in free throws.

Man, Nikki Caldwell is gonna look good in orange.

Again.

Bill James declares it over.

Wow. LSU conceding when most teams keep fouling.

Smart understanding of the clock by UT’s next head coach.

I think I got the prediction that time.

fwiw

Breadsticks?

Burdick? Tough between her, Simmons, and Baugh.

Definitely Burdick for my vote
I think it's gotta be Burdick.

Simmons going 16 to get 19 was …well, okay. But this team needed someone to replace Stricklen’s scoring, and it was Burdick, not Simmons.

Also: 31 minutes off the bench for Burdick.
Sooooo nice to have a solid midrange jumper in the lineup.
I agree with the two of you as well.

Particularly for somebody who is normally a reserve.

I've got Mickey on to hear his POG.

Aside: I’m going to be curious to hear how things go with Hughes. Her college career’s done, unfortunately.

Mickey goes with Burdick.

Will be fun to hear her interview.

Welp, I was wrong.

Good eyes.

Hey, fwiw, we actually shut down their leading scorer.

Barrett was 1-9 for 6 points.

Yeah. the D was good all game.

I’m shocked that a game involving Caldwell and CPS came down to defense and rebounding.

shocked

now you've got it

I just learned that this week

We used to use it a lot more.

We tend to get lazy, so it goes in cycles.

I've never had to use it to drive a point home.

I’m just good like that.

::cough::

I imagine Stricklen will be back for Notre Dame.

Glory will be fine. But still, that’s an on-the-road game I’m not looking forward to.

I predict a fail at ND

sorry to say

I'd agree.

No reason to believe otherwise.

If Spani’s back, you might be able to talk me into it though.

Me too.

Have to give props to ND. They’re a seriously good team.

2nd half rebounding: 25 UT, 16 LSU.

Much better.

G'nite guys - thanks for the conversation

i will look for that coaching committee post

I would've been much closer to the prediction if they had made their free throws like normal.
Cierra said that Stricklen talked to her pregame and told her that this was going to be her game.

That had to feel good.

See? Leader.

grumble grumble

Re: defense:

I’ve been struggling. I wear a size 13 1/2 shoe and these things don’t move as fast as I want them to sometimes.

Heh.

Vandy's getting steamrolled by Arkansas.

57-35 with 8 1/2 to go. I could have seen Arky winning, but I didn’t see that coming.
