Kevin Steele's resume is in another stratosphere from Buddy Green.
Kevin Steele had a sub-par year this year at Clemson after losing 6 starters overall, 4 of which were NFL level(3 all ACC 1st teamers, and Bowers being a top 2 player overall per almost all reputable mock drafts before his knee injury was discovered). The year before his defense was 13th in 2010, and in the top 25 in 2009. He was also voted a top 10 recruiter of the last decade. I’d take Steele ALL DAY over Green.

Buddy Green’s resume doesn’t make Steele look good.
Buddy Green may be a terrible coach for all I know, but he didn’t give up 70 after a month to prepare and then say they had no way to counter the speed of ONE player.
Buddy Green’s defense may have been mediocre at best but at least he can fall back on trying to recruit to a service academy instead of somewhere as nice as Clemson.
For the record, most of us who were at Chattanooga when Green was the coach think he is a royal ass so he’s far from my pick but doesn’t make Steele look like a winner by any means.

The WVU game was an anomaly imo.
Everybody saw Clemson mail it in after the turnover. Nobody thinks WVU is 40 points better than Clemson and most would take Clemson if they played again to win(almost everybody had Clemson pregame). There is no comparison between Green and Steele as far as who is more qualified. Steele isnt my first pick, but a solid DC and elite recruiter none the less.

Very true. It is officially desperation time, but a DC hire shouldnt be more of a long-term thing than a quick hire to save a class.
With that said, UT could do much better than Buddy Green. I mean I think they can? Cant they? Damn I dont know anymore. Maybe they cant right now.

IMHO Spangler would be a much better hire than Green. Additionally he would be my choice over Steele simply because his defenses improved every year. No offense to Steele but losing a couple guys to injury should not make that much difference. And this has been my stance on everything including Dooley, by year three with three full recruiting classes on campuses you should not be able to use injuries as an excuse for a poor performance or poor season. Subpar yes I will agree when the starter goes out you lose a little but it should not be that much. I think Spangler would be the better candidate. No way he would turn down a 500,000 contract and a chance at an SEC School. The guy is a GA Grad and played in the SEC.

In year 1 or 2 of a new coaching staff, with the depleted roster we had yes I am willing to make exceptions however as I have stated numerous times on this site next year Dooley gets no such pass, I don’t care if Bray and Hunter go down again and we have a couple injuries on Defense no excuse for another poor performance. Worley has experience and another year in the program same with other receivers and Defenders. At this point as I have stated a subpar performance yes, because starters will almost always be better but we should have enough talent by now that it is not poor and the season isnt poor!!

His first 2 years at Clemson were very good.
He lost 6 starters on defense before 2011, 4 of which were NFL caliber and 1 of those 4 was widely touted as a top 3 overall player nationally. Any DC would expect some kind of drop off after losing all that. Maybe their defense shouldve been better than it was, but definitely not as good as last year’s.

…has run a 2-4-5 defense at Navy for the past decade….didn’t even know such a thing existed. Obviously knew about 4-3, 3-4, 4-4, 3-3-5, and 4-2-5, but never had I heard of a base alignment involving only 2 down linemen. Don’t know about how effective that could be in this league….seems like power running teams (like Bama) would be absolutely licking their chops at the opportunity to face such an alignment. Maybe that’s why Navy sometimes gives up a million points in a game.
Of course, just because he’s run that at Navy doesn’t mean that’s what he’d do at UT, but it’s something to consider. And maybe he’s not even a serious candidate for the DC job….maybe he’d be the LB coach instead. We’ll see, but I would say this hire for DC would be highly underwhelming and would reek of desperation.

That sounds like it’d be good in lateral coverage, but could get rolled by power-running teams just due to a lack of bulk. Although those 2 would have to be beefy DTs, I’d think.

First and foremost, Navy builds to compete against USAFA and Army.
That lateral motion would be nice to have against an option team and probably makes it easier to cover both the QB and pitch man on option sweeps. But at a service academy, winning the CINC trophy is the most important thing. Period.

It's not as weird as it sounds
Occasionally people are even trying a 1-5-5. Both are basically a 3-4 with a tackle replaced by another (big) LB. Sorta the logical progression of zone blitzing- gives you the freedom to move LBs around at will, plugging gaps or dropping into hook or flats coverage, and preventing the QB and particularly the OL from having much an idea what you’re doing. There’s no reason it can’t be excellent against the run- you’re still keeping 7 or 8 guys in the box, they just have ever-changing gap assignments. You’re seeing similar ideas more often in the pros these days- the steelers run this sort of thing pretty often.

Statistically he's not too awful...
..but lordy, is it maddening to watch. We either tackle for a loss or give up 15 yards every play. I swear sometimes the thought is just to either force a fumble or give up the score as quickly as possible, to get Brees and company back on the field.

At least, not as the base of the defensive playbook. That’s the kind of thing you do at places like the academies, where you end up limited on the numbers (and quality) of linemen you can get in. Like the discussion about Sunseri earlier, Green would have to know enough about more conventional defenses to be able to run them, or he wouldn’t even make it past the introduction in the interview process.
People had the same knock about Calhoun when his name came up for the head coaching gig because he ran the option at Air Force, but they forgot that he had spent almost all his pre-USAFA career as a pro-style guy. Coaches don’t specialize in only one scheme anymore. They may have their favorites, but they won’t survive as coordinators if they can only do one thing. There is no such thing as a “3-4 guy” in that sense; just a guy who likes to recruit toward a 3-4 and run it when he can.

Oh, I agree.
It’s not like there’s this quantum difference between DEs and OLBs. A 2-4-5 is really not much different from a 3-3-5, which people are more accepting of. I like to think of it as a 3-3-5 with a bit more pre-snap flexibility at cost of a bit of interior leverage.

to get rid of those fake antivirus programs either.
I had a certain relative get it on their computer, and actually believed it’s messages due to their incredible lack of computer experience… I was actually a bit amazed. Needless to say this just made a total mess of things and the poor guy had ~25 viruses all going at the same time.
It required a manual cleaning… I suggested simply doing a clean install of Windows, but he offered me a hefty sum to fix it… apparently he didn’t want to lose his e-books. I attempted to point out that he could just download them again, but stopped trying after I got that confused look that everyone who has tried to fix a grandparent’s electronics has seen before.
Anyhoo… I ended up literally going through every single plausible line of the registry, consistently cross referenced the active processes, and was forced to restart about 50 times. And if you made a single mistake and one of the fake antivirus programs started up, you would be back to square one.
I personally keep LavaSoft Ad-Aware on 24/7 along with Malwarebytes. And I NEVER use Internet Explorer. Using IE is ASKING FOR IT. It’s basically browsing the internet with your File Manager(actually, it literally is). Seriously, use FireFox with pop-up blockers, AdBlock, and flash disabled.

I ran no-script (along with pop up blocker and adblock). It blocked flash and basically all other scripts that you didn’t explicitly allow to run. Loved it.
